ENT stands for ear, nose, and throat. The formal term for this medical specialty is otolaryngology. As well as diagnosing and treating ear, nose, and throat conditions, ENT specialists also see some head and neck concerns.
Your ENT specialist may recommend one or more of the following tests. These are all available on-site.
Balance tests (vestibular assessment): A test to find the cause of dizziness or imbalance by checking the function of your inner ears, eyes, and brain’s coordination system.
CT scan: A scan that uses X-ray and computer software to create detailed images of inside your body. It provides a better view of internal structures like the nose and sinuses.
Flexible laryngoscopy: A short procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the nose or mouth to examine the throat, voice box (larynx), and vocal cords. It’s typically used to investigate symptoms affecting the vocal cords and surrounding structures.
Hearing test (audiometry): A test to measure your hearing sensitivity across different pitches and volumes. It helps identify hearing loss by playing sounds through headphones and asking you to respond.
MRI scan: A scan that uses magnets and radio waves to produce images of inside your body. It’s used to help investigate hearing loss or complex ENT conditions.
Nasendoscopy: A short procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the nostril to examine the inside of your nose, throat, and voice box (larynx). It’s typically used to investigate nasal symptoms.
Tympanometry: A test that assesses the function of your middle ear (eardrum and tiny bones) by measuring how your eardrum moves in response to changes in air pressure.
Ultrasound: A scan that uses high frequency sound waves to create images of inside of your body. It can help diagnose lumps, swellings, salivary gland issues, and thyroid problems.
If you need surgery or another treatment we can’t provide at the centre, you can attend any one of our London hospitals. This includes Cromwell Hospital in Kensington, King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone, and New Victoria Hospital in Kingston upon Thames.
