FAQs

Breast screening is a safe, non-invasive way to detect breast cancer early. It uses a mammogram (a low-dose X-ray) to detect changes in breast tissue that are too small to see or feel. When breast cancer is found early, treatment is often more effective

The NHS offers invites women aged between 50 and 71 for routine breast screenings. This is because this age group is at higher risk.

However, breast cancer can still occur in women outside of this age bracket. That’s why many women opt for a private breast screening, which has no lower or upper age limits. You might also choose to go private if:

  • you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • you have a gene that increases your risk (BRCA1, BRCA2 or TP53)
  • you have dense breast tissue
  • you simply want peace of mind

No – if you have symptoms, please ask for an appointment with a breast consultant instead. They’ll be able to determine what tests you need and next steps.

Your breast consultant may recommend one or more of the following tests. These are all available onsite.

Biopsy: A short procedure that uses a needle to collect samples of tissue from a suspicious area within the breast. The sample is sent to a lab to confirm a diagnosis.

CT scan: A scan that uses X-ray and computer software to create detailed images of the breast. It can often provide a clearer view of dense tissue.

MRI scan: A scan that uses magnets and radio waves to produce images of the breast. It’s typically used to investigate unclear mammogram results or to stage diagnosed cancers.

Mammogram: A low-dose X-ray used to detect changes in the breast tissue that are too small to see or feel. It’s the main test used in breast screening and helps detect cancer early.

Ultrasound: A scan that uses high frequency sound waves to create images of the breast. It’s often used following a mammogram to look more closely at a specific area.

If you need surgery or another treatment we can’t provide at the centre, you can attend any one of our London hospitals. This includes Cromwell Hospital in Kensington, King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone, and New Victoria Hospital in Kingston upon Thames.

If you’re paying for your own care, please get in touch with us on 020 4604 9394. We’ll give you a clear price for your consultation and explain any costs for further tests or treatment.
